Learn more about the Amazon and the Juma Lodge: a jungle hotel

Amazon Rainforest

Before traveling to any destination it is important to check the climate of the region you are about to visit. After all, you need to prepare your luggage and pack clothes and accessories that will ensure you enjoy a comfortable and safe trip. (We have written another great post where we talk about all you need to bring to Juma: Amazon Rainforest: what to pack?)

What to expect from the climate in the Brazilian Amazon?

The proximity to the Equator (we are at latitude 03ºS) ensures year-round warm and humid weather at the lodge, with an average annual temperature of 27ºC (80ºF).  Temperatures vary between 21°C (70ºF) and 42°C (107ºF).  In this region, temperatures change more on the same day, than in between seasons (Eg, during the day it can get pretty hot, but when the night comes the temperature cools off). A really dense forest, with big trees and green leaves is the result of the humidity of this place.

While the Amazon is great to visit anytime of year, it is home to two distinct seasons:

  • FLOOD SEASON: Flood season occurs from March to August, when the water level rises to 15 meters (49 ft). This is the ideal moment to see the lush, flooded lands, known as igapó, in all of their glory.
  • DRY SEASON: Dry season occurs from September to February when the level of the rivers reaches its lowest point, crowding the fish together and making them easier to catch for both animal predators and fishermen. You are also more likely to spot caymans.

As we believe it is better to show than to talk, we decided to post below some photos that will help you understand what awaits for you in each season!
